But Satan deceived them—leading to their fall from the ˹blissful˺ state they were in,1 and We said, “Descend from the heavens ˹to the earth˺ as enemies to each other.2 You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”

Readings
fa-azallahumā sh-shayṭānu ʿanhā
“he caused them to err due to it” OR “he caused them to slip from it”
From the root word zallah (error): Satan caused them to err by means of the tree (shajarah).
fa-azālahumā sh-shayṭānu ʿanhā
“he caused them to be removed from it” OR “he caused them to slip from it”
Based on the root word zawāl (removal): Satan had them removed from the Garden (al-jannah).

Explanation

The readings are equivalent if both are taken to refer to how Satan removed Adam and Eve from their secure position in the Garden (izlāl can mean the same as izālah). It is also possible to see them as complementary meanings: the first refers to the error they were incited to make, and the second refers to the result, which was being removed from the Garden [al-Alusi]. The next phrase in the ayah then describes the end of their state of comfort and plenty [al-Mahdawi].

He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
