If you do not, then beware of a war with Allah and His Messenger! But if you repent, you may retain your principal—neither inflicting nor suffering harm.

Readings
fa-ʾdhanū
“take notice of war”
fa-ʾādhinū
“announce war (to each other)”

Explanation

The two readings (verb forms I and IV, respectively) amount to the same meaning: for the people who refuse to abandon usury to know collectively that they are facing war from God and His Messenger (ﷺ). The second reading makes this a matter they should announce to one another [Makki].

He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
