فلما وضعتها قالت رب اني وضعتها انثى والله اعلم بما وضعت وليس الذكر كالانثى واني سميتها مريم واني اعيذها بك وذريتها من الشيطان الرجيم ٣٦
فَلَمَّا وَضَعَتْهَا قَالَتْ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَضَعْتُهَآ أُنثَىٰ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا وَضَعَتْ وَلَيْسَ ٱلذَّكَرُ كَٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۖ وَإِنِّى سَمَّيْتُهَا مَرْيَمَ وَإِنِّىٓ أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ ٣٦
فَلَمَّا
وَضَعَتۡهَا
قَالَتۡ
رَبِّ
إِنِّي
وَضَعۡتُهَآ
أُنثَىٰ
وَٱللَّهُ
أَعۡلَمُ
بِمَا
وَضَعَتۡ
وَلَيۡسَ
ٱلذَّكَرُ
كَٱلۡأُنثَىٰۖ
وَإِنِّي
سَمَّيۡتُهَا
مَرۡيَمَ
وَإِنِّيٓ
أُعِيذُهَا
بِكَ
وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا
مِنَ
ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ
ٱلرَّجِيمِ

بِمَا وَضَعَتْ
bi-mā waḍaʿat
“She said, ‘Lord, I have given birth to a girl,’ while God knew best what she had given birth to…”
In this reading, the clause “God knew best” is an intervening divine comment, not quoted from the speech of Mary’s mother.
بِمَا وَضَعْتُ
bi-mā waḍaʿtu
“She said, ‘Lord, I have given birth to a girl, and God knows best what I have given birth to’...”
In this reading, the speech of Mary’s mother includes this clause.

Shpjegim

These two readings are complementary in meaning. It could be that this and the subsequent clause were uttered by Mary’s mother intending one meaning, and the divine commentary conveys another meaning: the elevated status of Mary [see al-Zamakhshari].
