اليوم ٤: The Ties That Bind

Quran Verses

يا ايها الناس اتقوا ربكم الذي خلقكم من نفس واحدة وخلق منها زوجها وبث منهما رجالا كثيرا ونساء واتقوا الله الذي تساءلون به والارحام ان الله كان عليكم رقيبا ١
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍْ وَٰحِدَةٍْ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًۭا كَثِيرًۭا وَنِسَآءًۭ ۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِى تَسَآءَلُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱلْأَرْحَامَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًۭا ١

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسٖ وَٰحِدَةٖ وَخَلَقَ مِنۡهَا زَوۡجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنۡهُمَا رِجَالٗا كَثِيرٗا وَنِسَآءٗۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِي تَسَآءَلُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱلۡأَرۡحَامَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ رَقِيبٗا ١ 

O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and ˹honour˺ family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.
والذين يصلون ما امر الله به ان يوصل ويخشون ربهم ويخافون سوء الحساب ٢١ والذين صبروا ابتغاء وجه ربهم واقاموا الصلاة وانفقوا مما رزقناهم سرا وعلانية ويدرءون بالحسنة السيية اولايك لهم عقبى الدار ٢٢
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَصِلُونَ مَآ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦٓ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ وَيَخَافُونَ سُوٓءَ ٱلْحِسَابِ ٢١ وَٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنفَقُواْ مِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ سِرًّۭا وَعَلَانِيَةًۭ وَيَدْرَءُونَ بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عُقْبَى ٱلدَّارِ ٢٢

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَصِلُونَ مَآ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦٓ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ وَيَخَافُونَ سُوٓءَ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ٢١ وَٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ ٱبۡتِغَآءَ وَجۡهِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنفَقُواْ مِمَّا رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ سِرّٗا وَعَلَانِيَةٗ وَيَدۡرَءُونَ بِٱلۡحَسَنَةِ ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ عُقۡبَى ٱلدَّارِ ٢٢ 

and those who maintain whatever ˹ties˺ Allah has ordered to be maintained, stand in awe of their Lord, and fear strict judgment. (21) And ˹they are˺ those who endure patiently, seeking their Lord’s pleasure, establish prayer, donate from what We have provided for them—secretly and openly—and respond to evil with good. It is they who will have the ultimate abode: (22)
فهل عسيتم ان توليتم ان تفسدوا في الارض وتقطعوا ارحامكم ٢٢ اولايك الذين لعنهم الله فاصمهم واعمى ابصارهم ٢٣
فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ أَن تُفْسِدُواْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوٓاْ أَرْحَامَكُمْ ٢٢ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَأَصَمَّهُمْ وَأَعْمَىٰٓ أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْ ٢٣

فَهَلۡ عَسَيۡتُمۡ إِن تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ أَن تُفۡسِدُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوٓاْ أَرۡحَامَكُمۡ ٢٢ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَأَصَمَّهُمۡ وَأَعۡمَىٰٓ أَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡ ٢٣ 

Now if you ˹hypocrites˺ turn away, perhaps you would then spread corruption throughout the land and sever your ˹ties of˺ kinship! (22) These are the ones who Allah has condemned, deafening them and blinding their eyes. (23)

Lesson & Reflection 

Family bonds (silat ar-rahim) are sacred connections named after Allah’s attribute Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful). The Arabic root “rahim” means both “womb” and “mercy,” reminding us that kinship is not just biological; it’s spiritual. To maintain family ties is to uphold a divine trust; to sever them is to turn away from the mercy that nourishes the soul.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The womb (rahim) is derived from Ar-Rahman. Allah said: Whoever maintains it, I will maintain ties with him; and whoever severs it, I will cut him off.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5988; Sahih Muslim 2554). In this, Allah declares that the way we treat our family directly affects our relationship with Him.

Maintaining ties is not always easy. Families can wound, misunderstand, or disappoint. But Islam does not call for perfection; it calls for perseverance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that, “The one who truly maintains family ties is not the one who does so only when they reciprocate, but the one who maintains them even when they cut him off.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5991).

This signifies spiritual strength, not weakness. When you reach out to a relative who wronged you, visit an estranged sibling, or forgive quietly for Allah’s sake, you are honoring Him more than them. Each act of reconciliation is witnessed by Allah, Who sends mercy upon those who uphold family ties.

Even if your family cannot meet you halfway, do your part. Call, send dua, offer help, and keep the door of peace open. Allah is the witness to your sincerity, and He will be your companion in loneliness.

Takeaway: The rope that connects family is among the ties that draw you nearer to Allah. Protect it, nurture it, and never let anger be stronger than mercy.

Hadith

“The womb (rahim) is derived from Ar-Rahman. Allah said: Whoever maintains it, I will maintain ties with him; and whoever severs it, I will cut him off.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5988; Sahih Muslim 2554)

Practical Activity

Action: Reach out to one relative you’ve grown distant from, even with a simple “As-salamu ‘alaykum” or a short dua for their well-being. Intend it solely for Allah’s sake.

Why it helps:

It revives love through humility.

It brings barakah (blessing) into your own life and sustenance.

It purifies the heart from resentment and pride.

النص بالعربي

بِسـمِ اللهِ الذي لا يَضُـرُّ مَعَ اسمِـهِ شَيءٌ في الأرْضِ وَلا في السّمـاءِ وَهـوَ السّمـيعُ العَلـيم (ثلاث مرات)

التهجئة الصوتية

Bismillāhi ‘l-ladhī lā yaḍurru ma`a-smihi shay'un fil-'ardhi wa lā fis-samā' wa huwas-Samī ul-`Alīm.

الترجمة

In the Name of Allah, Who with His Name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Recite three times in Arabic).

Reference: "Whoever recites it three times in the morning will not be afflicted by any calamity before evening, and whoever recites it three times in the evening will not be overtaken by any calamity before morning." Hisn al-Muslim 86

Whose name have you silently avoided in your dua? What would it mean for your soul to forgive or reach out, not for them, but for Allah?
