ثم لم تكن فتنتهم الا ان قالوا والله ربنا ما كنا مشركين ٢٣

In this reading, the word fitnah is the subject of kāna.

لَمْ يَكُنْ فِتْنَتَهُمْ
lam yakun fitnatahum
“Then only their saying…will be (i.e. manifest) their tribulation”
Here, the word fitnah is the predicate of kāna, and the phrase ‘their saying…’ is its subject. The two readings here vary also in the gender agreement with fitnah.
