Name

This Surah takes its name from v. 80.

Period of Revelation

It is clear from its topics and style that the period of its revelation is about the same as that of Surah Ibrahim, for two things are quite prominent in its background. First, it appears from the repeated warnings in this Surah that in spite of the fact that the Holy Prophet had been propagating the Message for many years, his people in general had not shown any inclination towards its acceptance nay, they had become more and more obdurate and stubborn in their antagonism, enmity and ridicule with the passage of time. Secondly, by that time the Holy Prophet had begun to feel a little tired of making strenuous efforts to eradicate disbelief and opposition of his people. That is why Allah has consoled and comforted him over and over again by way of encouragement.

Topics and the Central Theme

Though the main topics of the surah are:

  1. warning to those who rejected his Message, opposed it tooth and nail, and ridiculed him, and

  2. comfort and encouragement to the Holy Prophet,

It does not mean that this Surah does not contain admonition and instructions. As a matter of fact, the Quran never confines itself to mere warning; rebuke and censure, but resorts to precept in every suitable place. Accordingly, this Surah contains brief arguments for Tauhid on the one hand, and admonition in the story of Adam and Satan on the other.

ﭑﭒﭓ

قَالُوا لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ

Sahih International

[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

Swedish

[Och] de sade: "Du har ingenting att frukta! Vi kommer med det glada budskapet till dig att [du skall få] en son [som skall bli en vis man]."

قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَىٰ أَن مَّسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

Sahih International

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

Swedish

[Abraham] svarade: "Detta budskap ger ni mig trots min höga ålder? Vad är detta som ni säger mig?"

قَالُوا بَشَّرْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ الْقَانِطِينَ

Sahih International

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

Swedish

De sade: "Vårt budskap till dig är sanning. Var därför inte en av dem som misströstar [om Guds nåd]!"

قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ

Sahih International

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

Swedish

[Abraham] sade: "Vem - utom den som helt har gått vilse - ger upp hoppet om sin Herres nåd?"

ﭿ

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ

Swedish

[Och] han fortsatte: "Vilka [andra] ärenden för er hit, ärade budbärare?"

Sahih International

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

قَالُوا إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ

Swedish

De svarade: "Vi är sända till ett folk av obotfärdiga syndare [som skall förintas].

Sahih International

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Swedish

Lot och hela hans hus skall dock räddas -

Sahih International

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ قَدَّرْنَا ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ

Sahih International

Except his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind.

Swedish

utom hans hustru som skall bli kvar - så har Gud beslutat - tillsammans med de övriga."

فَلَمَّا جَاءَ آلَ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلُونَ

Sahih International

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

OCH NÄR de utsända kom till Lot

قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

Swedish

sade han: "Jag känner er inte."
